Description:

This story centers on three mismatched couples in Sweden. Desiree Armfeldt, an actress, is having an affair with Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm who is married to Countess Charlotte Malcolm. Fredrik Egerman, a lover from Desiree's past, is married to the young and virginal Anne. Henrik Egerman, Fredrik's son and a divinity student, is in love with his stepmother Anne. The romantic comedy of errors and intrigue features such characters as Anne’s saucy maid Petra, Desiree's worldly wise mother Madame Armfeldt, and Desiree's daughter, Fredrika, through whose eyes we see so much of the story. It is a story of love, humor, self-discovery, and timing amidst gossip and intrigue in the Swedish land of the midnight sun. The show debuted on Broadway in 1973 and received six Tony awards including best book, best original score, and best musical. (Description is taken in part from Sondheim.com)
