Desiree Armfeldt, an actress, is having an affair with Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm who is married to Countess Charlotte Malcolm. Frederik Egerman, a lover from Desiree's past, is married to the young and virginal Anne. Henrik Egerman, Frederik's son and a divinity student, is in loved with his stepmother Anne. The romantic comedy of errors and intrigue features such characters as Anne’s saucy maid Petra, Desiree's worldly wise mother Madame Armfeldt, and Desiree's daughter, Frederika. It is a story of love, humor, self-discovery, and timing amidst gossip and intrigue in the land of the midnight sun.
