Anton In Show Business
Feb 03 - 18, 2024
This madcap comedy follows three actresses across the footlights, down the rabbit hole, and into a strangely familiar Wonderland that looks a lot like American theatre – the resemblance is uncanny! As these women pursue their dream of performing Chekhov in Texas, they’re whisked through a maelstrom of “good ideas” that offer unique solutions to the Three Sisters’ need to have life’s deeper purpose revealed. In the tradition of great backstage comedies, Anton in Show Business conveys the joys, pains, and absurdities of “putting on a play” at the turn of the century. This play contains sexual themes and adult content. It is recommended for audiences age 18 and older.

Written by Jane Martin

“Anton in Show Business” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com.

The Prom

The careers of four eccentric Broadway stars are struggling. They desperately need a new stage upon which to shine bright once more. Seeking out a cause, they head to small-town Indiana. Through social media, they have heard of trouble brewing around a school prom. Local girl, Emma Nolan, wants to take her girlfriend to prom but the homophobic PTA is on a mission to keep the high school dance on the straight and narrow. Determined to transform lives and put themselves back in the limelight, the Broadway celebrities muscle in to change the town and give Emma the prom she deserves.

Our night of one acts features three previously un-produced works that have won the Little Theatre of Alexandria (LTA) One Act Competition held in the fall of 2023:

The Fengolonian Fiasco, written by Vicki Riba Koestler and directed by Allison Mollenkamp: A comedy about a middle-aged couple who attempt to inconspicuously dispose of a priceless artifact that one of them somewhat accidentally stole from an auction house.

North, written by Bruce Bonafede and directed by Alexa Roggenkamp: A moving drama about a stubborn man dealing with dementia while caring for his sick wife. He is confronted with his past mistakes as well as his inability to care for himself and for her.

The Dollar Dictator, written by Keely L. Herrick and directed by Fletcher Lowe: A dark comedy about the employees of a discount store who plot to remove their toxic store manager for his wildly inappropriate behavior and are met with unintended consequences.
